Wolfpack falls to Ponies in girls lacrosse

By Dan Mullen

Coming off a 14-11 win over Burnsville, the Park girls lacrosse team was defeated by Stillwater 14-4 Wednesday April 20. Park (1-2; 0-1) played tough early, but were unable to handle Stillwater’s ability.

“At this point in the season, their ability to pass and catch far surpasses our abilities,” said head coach Scot Leonard.  “We had a few defensive breakdowns and some costly turnovers that Stillwater will make you pay for.”

Stillwater (3-0; 1-0 SEC), ranked number four in state by the Star Tribune, was vulnerable early, but eventually outlasted the Wolfpack.

“After the first 15 minutes we were only down 4-3,” said Leonard. “Stillwater then showed why they are one of the best teams in the state outscoring us 7-0 to take an 11-3 halftime lead.”

Despite the loss, Leonard remains optimistic about this year’s team.

“We have a lot of athletic girls with very good speed that just need to learn how to play at the varsity level,” said Leonard. “(Stillwater) coach Reidt told us after the game that we are the fastest team they have played all season.”

Junior midfielder’s Allie Thalhuber (two goals) and Karissa Land (one goal) led the way for the Wolfpack. Senior Natalie Arcand also scored in her debut back in Wolfpack green after returning to Park High School for her senior season.

Sammi Reiter led the way for Stillwater, scoring eight goals.

Don’t know much about the guy — other than he’s a senior with a career 58% completion percentage — but this guy seems to think highly of him. I really can’t believe Jake Locker went eight to the Titans — I guess the Vince Young-era really is over. Wouldn’t mind to see some secondary and line — mainly offensive — help in the rest of the draft.

Spielman and Frazier discuss the pick.

Girls place second, boys fourth, in Wolfpack Track and Field Invitational

By Dan Mullen

On yet another cold spring day, the Park boys and girls track and field teams competed Thursday, April 21, at Park High School in the Wolfpack Invitational.

At the meet, the Park girls team took on Tartan and Hudson, placing second, 85.25 – 83.75, to Tartan. On the boy’s side, Park competed against Tartan, Hastings, and Hudson, placing fourth. With weather an issue, the boys struggled with a few of its regulars out.

“The weather was a factor for everyone,” said Park coach Mike Moran. “Our team had a couple regulars out but the important meets are in the future.”

Park's Sarah LaBrosse competing in long jump

Park freshman Temi Ogunrinde won the girl’s 100-meter dash with a time of 13.84 seconds. Ogunrinde also won the girl’s 200-meter dash, timing in at 29.94, as Park swept the top three, with Kianna Griffin (31.32) and Sharmaine Turner (31.92) following Ogunrinde.

Junior Karen Banks won the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.21 seconds. Banks said she did a good job considering the weather.

“I think I did pretty good today, considering it is really cold out,” said Banks.” (The cold) makes my muscles tighter and it is harder to get over the hurdles.”

Another Wolfpack standout was sophomore Gabrielle Fitzgerald, who won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.6, while her senior teammate Samantha Johnson came in second at 1:02.36.

Park's Dylan Smallidge

Freshman Kasondra Tulloch, who won the triple jump with a jump of 32-9, and freshman Sarah LaBrosse, who jumped 32-7 and took second, continued their impressive jumping results. LaBrosse said she could have jumped farther had it been warmer.

“I don’t think I did as well as I could have today, “ said LaBrosse. “It was freezing out there.”

Additionally, Wolfpack senior Tessa Sikich won the girls discuss throw with a toss of 108.1 and senior Jerrilynn Koltveit took second in the shot put with a toss of 31-10.

In the boys triple jump, sophomore Dylan Smallidge took second with a jump of 39-10 and senior Antoni Howard-Dominguez placed second in both the boys shot put, with a toss of 42-0, and the discuss throw, with a toss of 123-7.

Park Track and Field previously had its April 19 meet against Rosemount cancelled due to weather and will compete next April 26 against Eagan.
